In 5 online sessions over 3 weeks (with a time commitment of approximately 6-8 hours per week), new entrants and career changers will deepen their understanding of how the international insurance industry works and the challenges it faces today.

In compact and virtual sessions, you will gain a basic understanding of the structures of national and international insurance markets and the specifics of market services in life and non-life insurance. The processes of product development, distribution and claims management will be explained. As a result, you will have a better understanding of the technical and financial aspects of insurance management.

Objective

This short seminar gives you an overview of the structures of national and international insurance markets and the special features of insurance-specific market services and business processes. You will acquire the fundamentals of insurance and finance and discuss the significance and impact of current industry topics.

This online course is aimed at professionals or managers with limited industry knowledge and career changers who want to gain an overview of the structures of national and international insurance markets and the characteristics of insurance-specific market services and business processes.

Online Learning Methodology

This course is 100% online. The learning methodology is designed for distance learning and consists of three parts:

  • Flexible learning: Before the course starts, you will be given access to the I.VW-HSG online learning platform to participate in the live sessions. This will allow you to prepare for each module, interact with colleagues and learn at your own pace.

  • Live faculty sessions: You can log into each virtual session from the comfort of your home, office or on the road. Each session lasts approximately 3.5 hours with the professor. During the live session, you will actively engage with other participants to share ideas, give feedback or solve problems. Please allow an additional 0.5 hours per session for preparation and follow-up.

  • Knowledge transfer: You will have the opportunity to test your knowledge of the session, as well as the documents and videos for each unit, with a multiple-choice assessment. You will be able to formulate concrete measures for your work, so that you can put your learning directly into practice.

Course Structure

Over a period of 3 consecutive weeks, you will attend a 3.5-hour virtual lecture twice a week. You should allow a further 0.5 hours per week for preparation and wrap-up. In order to receive a certificate of participation, you must attend at least 50% of the virtual lectures.

Full Professor of Insurance Economics

Martin Eling is doing empirical research in the intersection of insurance management, mathematics, and economics. After his doctoral degree in 2005 he joined the I.VW as a postdoctoral researcher. In 2008 he was visiting professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Then in 2009 he was appointed Professor of Insurance at the University of Ulm. Since November 2011 he is Director of the I.VW and holds the Chair for Insurance Management at the University of St.Gallen. The Chair was established with support of the Swiss insurance industry.
